Here’s my honest review. No ads, no fluff — I’m telling you the truth because I’ve actually stayed here.
I’ve lived in Durban for more time than you can imagine, and I stayed at Beverly Hills Hotel Umhlanga Durban for 3 nights on different occasions. It sits right on the beach, approximately 18 km north of the Durban Central Business District (CBD)
The last time was in april 2026, and even then, the Beverly Hills experience was still worth the ZAR 5,693+ per night. Solid 5-star review from me.
Bottom line: the location is exactly what I said earlier — perfect. Beach access is impeccable. But rooms aren’t all the same. Some are small, some are big, so mention your preference when booking.

- Breakfast: Not clear if included. Most hotels in Umhlanga quote room-only. Add ~R350-R450 per person if breakfast is extra.
- Smoking: Even “smoking” rooms at Beverly Hills Umhlanga are actually non-smoking hotel. They just mean balcony smoking allowed. Double check at booking.

Best Things to Do Near Beverly Hills Umhlanga
- Umhlanga Beach Promenade – 1 min walk
Step out of the hotel and you’re there. Blue Flag beach, lifeguards in season, boardwalk for running/cycling. I did sunset walks every night I stayed. Free, and the view beats any restaurant. - Umhlanga Lighthouse – 3 min walk
The red & white lighthouse is the icon of Umhlanga. You can’t go inside, but photos at sunset here are insane. Right next to the promenade, so combine it with your beach walk. Built in 1954, still working. - Umhlanga Lagoon Nature Reserve – 5 min drive
Hidden gem most tourists skip. Boardwalks through mangroves + coastal forest. Good for bird watching and a quiet walk when you’re done with the beach. Free entry, takes 30-45 min. I went early morning and saw kingfishers. - Whalebone Pier + Pier – 2 min walk
You probably meant “Oyster Box Pier” not Aborn Pier. The Oyster Box Hotel pier is the famous one in Umhlanga. Walk out on the pier, watch fishermen, ocean on both sides. Best spot for sunrise photos. Grab coffee at Oyster Box after. - Chris Saunders Park – 8 min drive
Big green park locals love. Braai areas, playground, duck pond, shaded benches. If you’re traveling with kids or want a picnic, this is it. Free entry, parking available. I had lunch here once instead of a restaurant. - Umhlanga Ridge + Gateway Theatre – 5 min drive
Gateway is the biggest mall in Africa. Umhlanga Village next to it has cafés, restaurants, ice cream. Perfect for rainy Durban days. - uShaka Marine World – 22 min drive
Aquarium + water park + shark dives. Whole day activity if you’ve got kids or love marine life.
Quick tip from me: The best loop is: Hotel → Lighthouse → Pier → Promenade walk → Lagoon Reserve. You can do all 4 in 2 hours and they’re all within 5 min of Beverly Hills. Save Gateway + uShaka for day 2.
